Education and Society
This course examines the relationships of education and society with the use of interdisciplinary approaches, since education as a discipline spans the life course and happens in many contexts within society along with its social and political dynamics. This course offers students both theoretical overview and empirical observation on how education shapes societal development and social progress by addressing various essential issues e.g. how education creates good citizens and fosters good society, how education applies in diverse cultures of a society, how education promotes social mobility and alleviates poverty, the creation of middle-class groups, economic development and individual’s income, private and social benefits of education, how education promotes political democracy, and others.
The course sessions will also address some specific questions, among others: How should educational institutions be developed in order to play a role in making progress, improving welfare, social cohesion, social justice, and gender equality? Why do certain educational institutions with certain orientation grow and become mainstream in a society, whereas others decline or even be marginalized? The course also observes education and society by taking comparative studies in the contexts of Asian, African, and several Western countries. Given the increasing importance of the Muslim community in recent times, the course also examines a number of case studies of education in Muslim societies or in Muslim-majority countries. As the global communities have a great deal of attention for decades to education focusing on developing countries, this course will also address the role of the international agencies e.g. UNICEF, UNDP, UNESCO, the World Bank in promoting quality education for a country’s development. The main focus of this part is on the important role of international development partners in promoting quality education for the betterment of a nation. The course will be enriched with cross-subject analyses through the lenses of anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, and history.
Statistical Analysis
This course aims to provide solid foundation on principles and procedures of statistical analysis in quantitative research that often encounter within educational study. This course gives opportunity for students to have, not only a conceptual understanding of statistical analysis but also practical analysis of quantitative data by applying various statistical methods and models on which they are based.
Islamic Education

Mixed Methods Research
This course is designed to give students an overview of the use of mixed methods research. This course summarizes the key aspects of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods and uses a number of example research projects to discuss how they can be combined to answer research questions.
At the end of the course the students should demonstrate the ability to use the mixed methods. The students should be able to come up with a research question which is best researched via mixed methods. Starting with these research questions, students have the knowledge to write an appropriate research plan, know appropriate ways to analyze the data, and are able to discuss results coming from mixed methods data. Students should be able to communicate these ideas via a presentation.

Abstract
Redefining Inclusivity A Cultural Studies Perspective Through Systematic Literature Review
Susandi, D. G., Suhardjono, D. W., Damayanti, E., Artipah, A., & Rakhmawati, D. M. (2025). Redefining inclusivity: A cultural studies perspective through systematic literature review. Journal Albion: Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture, 7(1), 49-55.
Abstract
This research focuses on the wide-ranging notion of inclusivity looking at cultural studies and highlights the nonWestern contexts like Indonesia. Following PRISMA protocols, a systematic literature review was carried out on 45 selected articles published between the years of 2015 and 2025. The findings show that there are three primary themes: culture representation, power relations, and local traditions. It can also be remarked that the western notion of inclusivity seems inadequate when placed in collectivist contexts. ‘Gotong royong’ as an example of Indonesian inclusivity models reflects traditional local customs. Furthermore, decolonial and intersectional frameworks illuminate the enduring socio-historical inequalities that are shaped through identity-based hierarchies within practices of inclusion. This research articulates the need to develop a culturally specific framework of inclusivity which regards inclusivity as multiscopic; rooted in local contexts while applicable world
Reconstructing language curriculum in the digital era: A qualitative study on the role of technology in transforming learning

Reconstructing language curriculum in the digital era: A qualitative study on the role of technology in transforming learning. Abstract
In the midst of rapid digital transformation, language education faces the urgent need to redesign curricula that align with technological advancements while ensuring inclusivity. This study aims to investigate how technology facilitates the reconstruction of language curricula in urban Indonesian contexts. Employing a qualitative multi-site case study design, data were collected from 15 language teachers across eight schools in South Jakarta and South Tangerang between August and October 2024 through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed three major findings: (1) technological adaptation varied by region, with South Jakarta schools integrating advanced tools such as AI-powered applications, while South Tangerang relied on basic platforms due to infrastructural constraints; (2) pedagogical shifts toward learner-centered approaches were more evident in well-resourced schools, supported by collaborative digital tools; and (3) inclusivity efforts, including smartphone-based activities and bilingual resources, were hindered by socioeconomic disparities and unstable internet access. The study concludes that while technology holds transformative potential for language education, its impact is constrained by resource inequities, highlighting the need for targeted teacher training and equitable infrastructure investment. These findings contribute to the limited Southeast Asian literature on technology-enhanced curriculum design and offer practical implications for policymakers and educators in developing contexts.
