Lunch Talk #56: Reimagining Teacher Professionalism in an AI-Enabled World

You are invited to join the Lunch Talk #56 at the Faculty of Education, UIII
A/Prof Sitti Maesuri Patahuddin, PhD (Lecturer at University of Canberra) will share about: “Reimagining Teacher Professionalism in an AI-Enabled World”.
This talk aims to stimulate critical reflection on how artificial intelligence is reshaping the meaning of teacher professionalism and to explore its implications for teacher education, educational leadership, and higher education.
Artificial intelligence is transforming not only how knowledge is created and accessed, but also what it means to be a professional teacher. As generative AI increasingly performs routine instructional tasks—from generating lesson plans to providing instant explanations and feedback—it challenges long-held assumptions about the nature of teacher expertise. While professional knowledge, pedagogical competence, and ethical responsibility remain fundamental, they are no longer sufficient to define teacher professionalism in an AI-enabled world.
A/Prof Patahuddin argues that the defining characteristic of future-ready teachers will not be their ability to compete with AI, but their capacity to exercise informed, ethical, and context-sensitive professional judgment. Reimagining teacher professionalism therefore requires a shift from viewing teachers primarily as transmitters of knowledge to recognising them as engineers of meaningful learning experiences, reflective decision-makers, and lifelong learners who work intelligently with AI while remaining deeply responsive to the needs of their students and communities.
Drawing on contemporary developments in artificial intelligence, teacher education, and educational leadership, this talk invites universities, policymakers, and educators to rethink the capabilities that will define the next generation of teaching professionals. Rather than asking how AI might replace teachers, the presentation poses a more fundamental question: What kind of professional must teachers become in an AI-enabled world?
