About Researcher

Charyna’s research examines empathy as a developmental, ecological, and systemic construct, tracing how empathic capacity develops across the lifespan and how it is shaped by the nested systems surrounding learners and educators. Her earlier work developed the Basic Teacher Empathy Scale (BTES) using Many-Facet Rasch Measurement, establishing a methodological foundation in instrument validation and equity-focused analysis that informs her current theory-building. As Founder and Head of EmpathetiX, she extends this line of inquiry through the Empathy Ecosystem, a systemic framework connecting developmental psychology, educational wellbeing, and community practice.

Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII); Founder and Head, EmpathetiX Research Lab Unit

Current & Ongoing Research

  1. Empathy Ecosystem: A Systemic Theory of Empathy Across Human Development

This book develops the Empathy Ecosystem as a theoretical framework that integrates Carl Rogers’ phenomenological account of empathy, Martin Hoffman’s developmental stages, and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model into a single systemic account of how empathy forms and operates across the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Drawing further on Marcia’s identity theory, the manuscript introduces self-empathy as a conceptual ‘zero point’ preceding the microsystem, proposing that empathy toward others is preceded by, and dependent on, a stable relationship with the self. The book also includes a chapter examining empathy in an increasingly AI-mediated world. It is intended as both a scholarly contribution to developmental and educational psychology and a practical resource for educators, counselors, and policymakers seeking to embed empathy into learning environments and institutional design.

  1. Empathy Ecosystem as Equity Infrastructure in Indonesian Vocational Schools

This research operationalizes the Empathy Ecosystem framework as a tool for advancing equity in Indonesian vocational high schools (SMK), examining how empathy functions, or fails to function across the layered systems surrounding students from historically underserved backgrounds. The project applies Many-Facet Rasch Measurement and Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis to detect systemic bias in how empathy-related constructs are measured and experienced across student subgroups, treating psychometric rigor itself as an equity tool rather than a purely technical exercise. The study aims to produce both a validated measurement approach and practical, system-level recommendations for schools seeking to close empathy-related equity gaps.

  1. Empathy Ecosystem Across Universities: Preventing Sexual Violence through Practitioners’ Exchange

The project reframes empathy as institutional infrastructure rather than an individual trait, addressing the secondary victimization survivors may face under legalistic, compliance-driven campus procedures. Through a sequential practitioners’ exchange grounded in Appreciative Inquiry and case-based learning, partner universities in two countries co-create context-specific protocols spanning validative micro-level interactions, referral networks, institutional SOPs, and long-term policy anchoring. Planned outputs include a multilingual campus response playbook, a digital harassment toolkit, a transnational documentary, a certified training package, and a permanent regional practitioners’ network.

  1. Empathy for Anti-Bullying Bystanders in Pesantren Communities

This community engagement initiative works with pesantren communities to build empathy-based bystander intervention capacity as a response to bullying. Rather than focusing solely on victims or perpetrators, the project centers on the bystander: the santri who witnesses bullying but has not yet developed the empathic and social confidence to intervene safely. The initiative runs alongside an ongoing academic study that uses a constructivist Grounded Theory approach to build an indigenous, contextually grounded theory of bullying within pesantren settings, rather than testing imported Western frameworks. Insights from that research inform the design of empathy-building activities delivered directly to students and pesantren staff, with the aim of shifting bystander norms from silence toward safe, empathic intervention.

  1. Growing Up with AI: Empathy Development in an Age of AI Companionship

This emerging research direction extends the AI-and-empathy chapter of the Empathy Ecosystem book into an empirical research agenda, examining how young people’s growing attachment to AI companions and chatbots shapes the development of empathy. The project asks whether relationships that lack authentic attunement and mis-attunement repair the processes theorized to build empathic capacity through human relationships can still support healthy empathy development, or whether they risk blunting it. Framed within the Empathy Ecosystem, the project treats AI companionship as an emerging chronosystem influence layered onto more traditional developmental contexts. Currently at an early conceptual stage, the project’s first phase will involve scoping the literature and identifying a feasible study population before finalizing a design and any funding application.

  1. Empathy Across Generations: Communal Caregiving Contexts in Indonesian Communities

Much of the empathy and attachment literature has been developed and normed around a Western, middle-class, single-caregiver dyad, an assumption that may not adequately reflect Indonesian contexts where layered caregiving such as grandparents, extended family, or, in pesantren settings, senior students and ustadz/ustadzah is the norm rather than the exception. This project examines how empathy is transmitted across generations within these communal caregiving structures, asking how multiple attachment figures shape empathic development differently than a single-dyad model would predict. The project is intended as a substantive, indigenous contribution rather than a test of imported frameworks, in keeping with the Grounded Theory approach already used in the pesantren bullying research. It is at an early conceptual stage, with pesantren and extended-family contexts as likely starting points for fieldwork.
