Lunch Talk #54: AI and Language Learner Autonomy: Critical Issues, Trends, and Teacher Autonomy for Professional Learning

You are invited to join the Lunch Talk #54 at the Faculty of Education, UIII
Teguh Khaerudin, PhD (Lecturer at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and Scholar in Residence Fellow at the Faculty of Education UIII) will share about: “AI and Language Learner Autonomy: Critical Issues, Trends, and Teacher Autonomy for Professional Learning”.
Artificial intelligence is transforming language learning by providing learners with unprecedented access to personalised feedback, learning resources, and opportunities for self-directed practice. This talk examines how AI technologies, particularly generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, can support key dimensions of language learner autonomy, including goal setting, resource selection, self-monitoring, and reflection. At the same time, it explores emerging concerns about learner dependency, critical AI literacy, and the changing meaning of autonomy in an AI-mediated learning environment. Drawing on previous research on learner autonomy and teacher professional learning, the talk discusses how educators can leverage AI to foster more autonomous, reflective, and self-regulated language learners.
